# Make sure your sitemap lists your products

Your sitemap is the list of pages you hand to search engines and agents. Shopify writes one for you, so most problems come from something that changed it or from links that no longer reach a product.

Check D1 in the Discovery dimension, worth 4 points of 100 and measured by software.

## What we check

One point each for four things. A sitemap is reachable, through a Sitemap line in robots.txt or at /sitemap.xml. It lists product pages. At least 90% of its product entries carry a lastmod date. And 5 product URLs from it answer 200 and land on a product page, without redirecting to the homepage, a collection or a page that says the product is gone.

## Why it matters

Agents and search indexes use sitemaps to find products to recommend.

The lastmod dates tell them which products changed and are worth fetching again. Google, for one, says it uses lastmod only when it's consistently accurate.

## How to fix it

Find the app or theme setting that overrides Shopify's built-in sitemap. Typical effort: 1 hour.

1. Open yourstore.com/sitemap.xml. Shopify generates it, with separate sitemaps for products, collections, pages and blogs, and it can't be edited directly.
2. If it's missing or lists no products, look for an app, a headless front end or a redirect that replaces it.
3. Products that aren't available on the Online Store sales channel don't appear in it, so check the channel availability of the products you want found.
4. If product links in it redirect to your homepage, look for the app or setting that sends them there, such as a geolocation or market redirect.

## Check it yourself

Open yourstore.com/sitemap.xml, follow the products sitemap and open a few of its links. Each should open its product page directly.
